When we were children we were grateful to those who filled our stockings at Christmas time. Why are we not grateful to God for filling our stockings with legs?
Moving between the legs of tables and of chairs, rising or falling, grasping at kisses and toys, advancing boldly, sudden to take alarm, retreating to the corner of arm and knee, eager to be reassured, taking pleasure in the fragrant brilliance of the Christmas tree.
There is no biblical instruction to celebrate Christmas or to emphasize the birth of Christ. Because of the human origin of this holiday, it has become so materialized that things are the emphasis of everyone's thinking.
The denominational world tries to pressure its members to focus on the birth of Christ, but in doing so layers of guilt are imposed, and competition gets complicated as one Christmas program tries to outdo the other.
This is not to say that Christmas is not a fun time; it is just to say that it is not in the same league as Thanksgiving.
